Gambling Casinos - Blackjack Poker

by Jerry "Jet" Whittaker

Blackjack poker:

The Blackjack or the 21 or pontoon is one of the most popular card games till date. It is a game in which the aim of the player is to achieve a hand whose points total nearer to 21. The total should be greater than the dealer’s hand, but without exceeding 21. In Nevada casinos, this game is called 21 rather than Blackjack. "Blackjack" is the name of the same game played at home, with slightly different rules mostly as house dealer is absent.

Card values:

Ace (of any suite) has the 1 or 11(in case of soft hand) whereas 2 through 9 cards hold the face value and Jack, Queen, King all hold the value 10.

The suits do-not hold any importance in this game. It’s just the sum of the points of the cards. In case of Ace there are some rules for considering its value as 1 or 11 depending on the cards that are drawn along with it. Its value changes so as not to make it 21. For example: If the card pair is (Ace, 8) the total would be 19 if the player makes a ‘stay’ else if he wants to withdraw another card after that, the value of the card depends on the succeeding card drawn. If the player decides to ‘Hit’ and gets a (Ace, 8, 2) pair, then the sum is considered to be 21 and not 11.

(Ace, Queen),(Ace, King) are considered as the 21s whereas (Ace, Jack) pair is said to be a “Blackjack” or a “natural”.

The Jargon:

Terms used in Blackjack:

Stand: If the player does not want to draw cards any further.

Hit: If player wants to draw cards.

Double down: If player wants to double the bet but, take exactly one more card after that and stand.

Split: This option is available only if the cards in hand have the same face value and can be split in exact halves else each card is considered as the 1st card in 2 separate new hands. In split, the bet is doubled.

Surrender: If the player wants to give up his hand. In this process the player looses half of the placed bet.

The Actual Game:

When all the players have finished, the dealer plays his hand.

The play goes as follows:

If the dealer holds the blackjack and the player doesn’t, the dealer wins else the player wins. If both the player & dealer have blackjack then it's a draw or is also called as a push.
