Actually, there is no single, clear-cut definition of what is gambling is but it is widely agreed that; two or more people agree to take part in the activity. Usually the operator and the gambler who wishes to gamble, normally money is paid by the loser to the winner, the outcome is uncertain, the result is determined by chance, participation is an active experience but can be avoided by not taking part. Most people gamble safely, for entertainment, to socialize or to try their luck or skill. They limit their time and spending to what they can afford, and they see their losses as the cost of their entertainment. They enjoy their wins, but know that they happen largely or entirely by chance. Those who gamble safely do not rely on gambling as the sole source of their fun, and they have a variety of other activities that they participate in for leisure. Despite a history of gambling problems throughout intercollegiate sports during the last forty years, there has been limited formal research into this controversial area. Much of the evidence of gambling behaviour by student athletes is anecdotal and comes from police or media reports that likely represent only the tip.
