Gambling per say, is defined as “the wagering of money
or something of material value on an event with an
uncertain outcome with the primary intention of winning
money or material goods”. Gambling is a huge industry
generating an income of millions of dollars annually.
This figure is expected to double in the near future,
considering the increasing popularity of gambling among
people. As gambling has adverse social implications,
state authorities are trying their best to pass certain

Types of betting
Betting systems have been around as long as gambling.
Sport’s betting is an offshoot of gambling and is
steadily gaining ground in most countries. It is the
activity of predicting the result of a game by making a
bet on the outcome of the event. One of the most
widespread forms of gambling is betting on racehorses,
mainly on races between thoroughbreds or between
standardbreds. Betting may take place through parimutuel
tools or via bookmakers, who take bets personally.
Scratchcards are very popular forms of gambling due to
their low price. A scratch card is a small piece of card
where an area is covered by a substance that cannot be
seen through, but can be scratched off. The items or
pictures that must be found in order to win are
concealed beneath this area. Arbitrage betting is a
risk-free betting in which the result of an event is bet
upon so that a known profit is made by the bettor on
completion of the event. This is regardless of the
outcome generated. Fixed odds gambling and Parimutuel
betting occurs frequently at events such as horseracing,
golf, tennis, basketball, ice hockey, baseball and motor
sports.
