Football Gambling

by Jerry "Jet" Whittaker
April 22, 2006

Gambling in sports

Besides the thrill of the sport itself, an additional excitement of betting and gambling on football has contributed to the growing spread of the game as such.

Legalities

Gambling in football is not considered legal in many parts of the world, and even in some parts of America, however, Most of Europe is okay with it. Even by conservative estimates, and football gambling could well be a multi-billion dollar industry.

The system of football gambling

For a beginner, it is very important to know the lingo, and the way the gambling game goes. It would be worthwhile for anyone seriously considering pursuing football gambling, to take time to see, observe, understand and learn the trade before jumping in. It could be very confusing to just go and place a bet and wait for the outcome. Football, by itself may have different systems of betting in different areas, but the basic lingo and jargon is same. Let’s have a look at it to get a better idea.

Action –The betting activity is described as Action. The use is frequent in areas where football gambling is banned as no bookies are in the yellow pages.

Handicap –Is a leveling tool. If a team is much stronger than the other for a contest, it gets a handicap so that the field is even.

Handle –The total amount of money wagered

Sports book & Bookie - An establishment that takes bets, also known as a book. The person who accepts bets is a bookie.

Juice – what the bookie gets for accepting all the bets is called juice. It is a percentage of the total amount wagered. The juice could also be decided on the odds.

The spread –spread is also a type of handicap used to make the game more thrilling for the gamblers. Every game will have a favorite and the underdog. The favorite gets a handicap of a few points and has to beat the underdog by a margin more than the spread for the bet to hold. Standard notation for the point spread shows the favored team first, followed by a negative number (the actual spread). The home team is shown in capital letters. So if Rogers were playing Turks on Turks’ home ground, and they were favored to win by seven points, it would look like this:

Rogers -4; Turks

To win a bet on Rogers win, the Rogers must win by more than 4 goals. This is just a way of compensating the obvious.

The money line – Sometimes money line system also is used to compensate the difference in strength of teams. Here instead of the points or goals, for every $1 in winnings from the game while betting in favour of the favorite, one has to stake say, $1.20. We can also call it as a premium or in exactly the opposite circumstances, a discount. The higher the premium, the lower the return and vice versa...

These is just a brief idea of the behind the scenes methodology that runs the system. As one gets experienced, there are more backroom tricks that can be picked up. However, the key here is to understand the game as much, know the players, playing conditions and the form the teams are in. Football being the most popular sport in the world, active gamblers tracks the progress of teams, movement, health, and form of players and uses the information actively to place their bets. One can also see a trend setter changing the odds by taking a position exactly opposite to the general consensus.

Football gambling is perhaps much more complex than the game itself, and it would need a series of such articles for us to present the process in compressive detail, meanwhile, we do suggest that no one should miss out on any of the action, take the plunge with this tit bit, and learn your ropes as you go along, Keep your eyes and ears open always.
