heavy sponsorship and promotion of poker. For many years, local league
players would simply get togethor with the club on weekends and play amongst
themselves. Nowadays, ask any serious weekend player about his recent poker
games and he will probably go on and on about his shot at playing in the
next big WPT event. All of this is due to the WPT's recent focus on local
sponsorship across the US and their involvement in local leagues and
instructional clinics. Local players across the US are frequently playing in
'satellite' events that offer the chance to play for big time money at a
World Poker Tour final table. Another major factor is the WPT's involvement
in charity events which offer the winner a chance to play for big time money
on the professional stage. According to Jason Reagan of Ft. Pierce, Florida,
"I've been playing poker (Texas Hold'em) for about 5 years, mostly in local
area leagues. Now I'm gunning for a WPT event." The World Poker Tour
partners with Host casinos all across the United States. They bring
excitement and prosperity to a game that has taken on alot of recent
criticism due to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Act of 2006 which caused the
shutdown of major online poker outfits such as PartyPoker.</p>
