AUTHOR: Jerry "Jet" Whittaker TITLE: 'Poker run' will benefit assault victim left for dead DATE: 6:05 AM ----- BODY:
A benefit "poker run" will be held Sunday for Ashley Reeves, the Millstadt teenager who was left for dead in a Belleville park in April. A poker run is an organized motorcycle event in which riders stop at designated places along a route, drawing a card at each to form a poker hand. The rider with the best hand at the end of the route wins. The event will begin at the Whistle Stop restaurant and bar, on Main Street in Dupo, and will finish at Falling Springs, also in Dupo. A hand will cost $5. Three more cards will cost $10. In late April, police found Reeves partially buried in Belleville's Citizens Park. Her neck had been snapped and she had been choked multiple times with a belt. Her former gym teacher, Samson Shelton, was later charged with attempted murder. He remains under house arrest on bond. Reeves was released from the hospital in May after a monthlong stay. She spent roughly a month in a Maryland Heights rehabilitation facility after her release and continues to undergo rehabilitation treatment while living at home.
