The small colored metal or plastic discs used in gambling establishments are termed and coined as casino tokens. Usually two types of tokens are used in casinos. Chips (multicolor tokens of various denominations) and metal token coins. Chips are used primarily in table games and other variety is used primarily in slot machines. Gaming plaques are also used for high stakes table games by some casinos. These denominations are about $25,000 and above. These plaques differ from chips as they are larger and usually rectangular in shape and also contain serial numbers. There is a section of cashier station called the cage. For the token coins or chips in a casino money is exchanged at the cage, at the gaming tables, and at a slot machine. These tokens do not have any value outside of the casino, but are interchangeable with money at the establishment. For several reasons and functions these tokens are deployed and employed. Tokens are handier to use than currency, and also it is difficult it to steal or counterfeit. The tokens, especially chips are easier to count compared to paper currency when used on a table as they are of the uniform size and also due to their regularity of stacks. This factor also helps to quickly verify the amount being paid and also enables the pit boss or security to reduce the chance of a dealer who might be overpaying a customer. Also according to survey the players gamble more freely with replacement currencies than with cash. Read further...

There have been several federal laws proposed in the legislature that would have prohibited additional forms of online gambling beyond sports betting. The proposed laws have been enacted. Betting on horse racing and dog racing are specifically authorized under federal law if certain criteria are met. Federal gambling law does not address games of skill, and there are many skill gaming sites that operate within the United States. If a bettor and an operator are based in different states, the Department of Justice views gambling as occurring in both jurisdictions. Despite the narrow limits of federal gambling prohibitions, barriers to online gambling in the United States extend beyond legal restrictions. The law clarifies that credit card agencies are not in violation of racketeering laws if they permit their services to be used for online gambling, most major credit cards in the United States have adopted policies of declining online gambling transactions. The internet escrow service settled a New York state lawsuit by adopting a similar policy of declining transactions from online gambling sites. -------- AUTHOR: Jerry "Jet" Whittaker TITLE: Poker Exercises DATE: 1:34 PM ----- BODY:
How often has this happened to you? You've mucked your garbage cards in early position and there is nothing left to do but to watch the other player finish the hand. Because you aren't emotionally or financially involved in the hand, you can tell EXACTLY what everyone has. It's completely obvious to you that one player has the nuts, for instance. And you watch, fascinated, as another player bets into the nut hand with NO outs. To compound the error, the player who is drawing dead now calls a raise on the river to lose even more money. Before the winner is turned over, you mentally call the winning hand to yourself, and are not at all surprised when the two cards you expected to see are revealed. Why are hands so easy to read when you're NOT involved? Good question! Why are they so hard to read when you have YOUR money in the pot? Another good question. Poker is a game of mistakes. The player who makes the least misjudgments, misreads and downright DUMB plays is most likely to go home with the cash. I'm going to give you an exercise that is quite advanced for a change. Every once in a while you should be given a chance to go to another level of play. If you are like most players (myself included), you won't be able to complete this exercise for long. At best you'll only be able to manage a few minutes of the exercise before failing. Here is what I want you to do. One night next week, before you get out of the car in your card room parking lot and go in to play, I want you to stop for a few minutes and concentrate. I want you to visualize yourself as you sit behind the wheel. As you see yourself, pretend that you are a director in a movie where you are the star. The movie is about you. Now you are NOT the player, you are the director watching an actor playing you. Are you still with me? The person that is normally you, now is an actor playing you, ok? For as long as you can maintain the exercise, watch yourself play poker from a camera angle just over your right shoulder. Within the picture frame, the camera can see all the players at the table and can zoom in on your hand when it is dealt to you. Instead of you putting your money in the pot, you are watching an actor putting his chips in the pot. Now the camera follows everyone in turn around the table. From this detached point of view, suddenly everyone's motives for acting are revealed. Including YOURS. To your amazement, you will find yourself saying about the actor playing you. "Why did he do that? That was so STUPID! The guy in the three seat OBVIOUSLY has the best hand!" Now as the director, you tell the actor that is playing you to throw the hand away. Of course, the actor does what he is told. The exercise is complete when the player in the three seat turns over EXACTLY the hand the detached, uninvolved you put him on. You have now done what you couldn't do before. You've played a hand as if you weren't emotionally and financially involved. And you saved a lot of money. Don't expect to be able to maintain this exercise for long. It takes years of practice. But if you can do it even for a few hands a night, the difference in your play can be substantial. Poker will become a game of mistakes for the other players, not you.
-------- AUTHOR: Jerry "Jet" Whittaker TITLE: Modifying Your Game Play DATE: 1:29 PM ----- BODY:
You know as well that there were plenty of times you wished you had left a game before you did. This whole article is about "not" pushing your luck when it’s starting to run dry. Most poker players have a little voice that tells them when they’re headed for a bad night. That little voice tells you: "Get out of this game; it has no future for you." There was a time I rarely listened to this voice. Over the years I learned to listen very carefully to that little voice. It has saved me a great deal of money, but I still don't listen to it 100% of the time. When I start to hear that warning, I start to evaluate the game I am in to see what is wrong with it. The important part is that I usually know before I evaluate the game, what's wrong with it and why I should move to another game, or leave altogether. The problem is that I get too comfortable, complacent, and too lazy to move. Here are some different ways to evaluate a question regarding games we should quit. QUESTION I just completed a 15-hour losing session playing 10/20 hold'em, losing 3 big bets per hour. I was exactly even after playing about 3 hours. I got back to even after taking a beating at the beginning of the game, and clawing my way back up. My gut feeling told me, or I should say it pretty much screamed at me in its subtle way to quit, go home, and get them another day. Of course I decided differently, and paid for it. Once you've become the main course for everyone at the table, you must tighten up considerably for a variety of reasons. The tendency to win back quickly what you have lost affects your starting hand requirements, and you start playing more hands than you normally would. You may also be on an emotional tilt as well, thereby affecting your decisions as the game continues on. This is a bad sign, and one of the first steps toward going on tilt. Here's something important to think about. By playing tighter than normal, you give someone else the chance to become fodder for the other piranhas. Get up and take a break that lasts at least until the button comes around a couple of times. There are times when even your attempt at trying to play tighter can also work against you. By taking a break and maybe taking a little walk, you will get a chance to simmer down. If you are really mentally on tilt, get up from the table, grab your chips, cash out and leave. Do something else for the day, something you enjoy as much or more than poker. Forget all that fairytale BS about wanting to play against good players, and the honor of the glorious professional poker player. Most of the successful players are predators out to exploit every weakness they can find. They want their opponents as live and as dumb as possible, up to a certain point of course. They want the proper mix of tight players and live ones. The bottom line is that poker is a game of control. If you have to have the skill to control the other players in the game better than they can control you, that's great. The problem is how can you control the game when everyone else is feasting off your plays no matter what you do? You are losing and not only do you know it, but so does the rest of the table. I don't care if you are the best player in the game, if you are running bad, even the poor players will start taking shots at you. Poker is one of the few games where the best player does not always win. The old saying, "Let your conscience be your guide," has a lot of merit. If everyone listened to and obeyed their conscience they most likely would not drink, smoke, overeat, do drugs, or stay in bad poker games. There are a lot of things we can have a problem controlling, but one of the easiest we can learn to control is getting our butts out of the chair in a game we can't seem to beat, and move to a better one. It's easy, just go to the floor and say, “I would like a transfer to another game." Is that simple? Yes it is, but do we do it all the time? No we don't. It might just boost your profit. It sure as heck can't hurt.

-------- AUTHOR: Jerry "Jet" Whittaker TITLE: U.S. Online Gambling Policy Violates Law, W.T.O. Rules DATE: 5:14 PM ----- BODY:
Very interesting article about Online Gambling

The World Trade Organization, in its first decision on an Internet-related dispute, has ignited a political, cultural and legal tinderbox by ruling that the United States policy prohibiting online gambling violates international trade law.

The ruling, issued by a W.T.O. panel on Wednesday, is being hailed by operators of online casinos based overseas as a major victory that could force America to liberalize laws outlawing their business.

But the Bush administration vowed to appeal the decision, and several members of Congress said they would rather have an international trade war or withdraw from future rounds of the World Trade Organization than have American social policy dictated from abroad.

"It's appalling," said Representative Bob Goodlatte, a Virginia Republican. "It cannot be allowed to stand that another nation can impose its values on the U.S. and make it a trade issue."

The decision stems from a case brought to the W.T.O. in June 2003 by the tiny island nation of Antigua and Barbuda. The nation, which licenses 19 companies that offer sports betting and casino games like blackjack over the Internet, argued that United States trade policy does not prohibit cross-border gambling operations. Antigua and Barbuda further argued that the United States would be hypocritical to do otherwise since it wants to allow American casino operations to operate land-based and Internet-based units overseas.

It is not clear precisely why the dispute panel of the trade body ruled in favor of Antigua and Barbuda, since the specifics of its decision remain confidential. The ruling covers only online casinos based on the islands, near Puerto Rico, but other nations could seek similar rulings, legal experts said.

Sir Ronald Sanders, the islands' chief foreign affairs representative, said he thought it was clear from the decision that the United States must liberalize its online gambling regulations or risk being hypocritical about its stance on free trade.

"The U.S. says it wants open competition," he said. "But it only wants free trade when it suits the U.S."

The issue has emerged at the nexus of already complicated legal and social issues muddied further by the borderless reach of the Internet. Millions of Americans now gamble over the Internet, using credit cards or online payment services to wager on sports contests or at games like poker, blackjack and roulette.

Under federal law, it is illegal to offer sports bets over the Internet or to operate other gambling operations not otherwise allowed by individual states. State laws vary widely, with some allowing specific forms of gambling within their borders. Some states criminalize the placing of a bet, but others, like New York, do not make it a crime to bet online.

Online casinos are typically based in Costa Rica or the Caribbean, but also in Britain. Their business continues to grow, but not nearly as fast as industry experts once projected; the slower growth has come in part because many banks do not allow their credit cards to be used to place bets.

Also, the Justice Department has begun to crack down on American broadcasters and publishers that advertise on behalf of online casinos. The crackdown, based on an untested legal theory that American companies are aiding an illegal enterprise, has limited the ability of online casinos to reach Americans.

Sebastian Sinclair, a research analyst who studies the Internet gambling industry, said he doubted the W.T.O. decision would affect America's internal policies and instead could strengthen the resolve of policy makers who want to see the activity prohibited. At the same time, he said the decision showed the gulf in policy on the issue between America and much of the world.

"We're going down one path, and the rest of the world is going down a completely different path," said Mr. Sinclair, an analyst with Christiansen Capital Advisors.

Mr. Sinclair added that the ruling was as a "nonevent" for the Las Vegas casinos and other legal gambling operations in the United States because they risk losing their charters if they open a casino - online or otherwise - that in any way violates the licenses in states where they operate. Those state licenses could, for example, preclude legal casinos from offering wagers to Americans where gambling is not permitted.

Sir Ronald, the official from Antigua and Barbuda, said that two years ago the nation, which has population of less than 100,000, had 119 online casinos with 5,000 employees. Today, he said, its 30 operations have about 1,000 employees.

He argued that if the United States loses an appeal before the W.T.O. and then continues to prohibit online gambling, Antigua and Barbuda would be within its international rights to raise tariffs on American companies doing business there. Sir Ronald said that since 90 percent of what his country consumes it imports from the United States, the impact could be severe for American companies like AT&T.

He said America has frequently used the trade organization to further its interests, including forcing nations to make internal policies consistent with international law. He did not cite specific examples.

Mr. Goodlatte said that the United States did not expect to change its policy and that the people of Antigua and Barbuda "may have a mini-trade war on their hands."

The congressman, along with Senator John Kyl, a Republican from Arizona, said he would question America's participation in future agreements under the auspices of the World Trade Organization.

David Carruthers, chief executive of Betonsports.com, an Internet sports book operation and casino with headquarters in Costa Rica and back-office operations in Antigua and Barbuda, said he hoped the W.T.O. decision would lead to legalized online gambling in America.

In 2003, he said, his company took 33 million bets from people in North America, most of them in the United States. He said he had 1.2 million registered customers who are United States residents.

"This could be the straw that breaks the camel's back," he said. "It's a victory for the people of Antigua but also for consumers in the United States."

I found this very good article about underage gambling. Please read:

Exposure to Ads and Easy Access to Age Restricted Sites Among Dangers Cited

Federal Trade Commission Chairman Timothy J. Muris today announced the results of an informal survey of websites to determine the access and exposure teens have to online gambling. The FTC visited over 100 popular gambling websites - and found that minors can, indeed, access these sites easily, and that minors are often exposed to ads for online gambling on non-gambling websites.

FTC staff found that the gambling sites had inadequate or hard-to-find warnings about underage gambling prohibitions, and that some 20 percent had no warning at all. The survey also found that these gambling sites had no effective mechanism to block minors from entering. Muris talked about the survey at a Roundtable discussion he hosted with Representative Frank Wolf. Other speakers included Rachel Volberg, Ph.D., a member of the board of directors of the National Council on Problem Gambling, and Marianne Guschwan, M.D., Chair, American Psychiatric Association Committee on Treatment Services or Addicted Patients.

"Our informal review of gambling websites, child-oriented sites, and non-gambling sites was a valuable education," said Chairman Muris. "Here's what we learned: Online gambling and kids is a bad bet."

The FTC wants teens and parents to understand the risks associated with kids gambling online:

You can lose your money. Online gambling operations are in business to make a profit. They take in more money than they pay out.

You can ruin a good credit rating. Online gambling generally requires the use of a credit card. If kids rack up debt online, they could ruin their credit rating - or their parent's.

Online gambling can be addictive. Because Internet gambling is a solitary activity, people can gamble uninterrupted and undetected for hours at a time. Gambling in social isolation and using credit to gamble may be risk factors for developing gambling problems.

Gambling is illegal for kids. Every state prohibits gambling by minors. That's why gambling sites don't pay out to kids and go to great lengths to verify the identity of any winner.

A gambling behavior which causes major disruptions in any major area of life whether physiological, physical, social or vocational is collectively known as problem gambling. It can be said that problem gambling is that form of gambling which goes beyond normal bounds of gambling for fun, recreation or entertainment. Problem gambling is often referred to as pathological or compulsive form of gambling where the gambler becomes unable to resist the impulses to gambling over an extended period of time. Pathological or problem gamblers often feel the need to bet more frequently and in larger amounts, and continue to gamble in spite of the serious negative consequences of their behavior. An important thing to note here is that anyone who gambles a lot for the sake of enjoying gambling as an entertainment will not be considered as a pathological gambler provided they set aside a predetermined amount of money for gambling, gamble for fun rather than for the certainty of winning, recognize that they are likely to lose, and don't bet more than they can afford to lose.
